EPA Conducting Five-Year Review of Endicott Village Well Field Superfund Cleanup
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently conducting its sixth Five-Year Review of the Endicott Village Well Field Superfund Site in Broome County. This federally mandated review ensures that cleanup efforts at the site continue to be effective in protecting both public health and the environment.
The site, which includes the Village’s municipal Ranney Well and surrounding groundwater systems, has undergone a series of long-term cleanup actions, including:
Installation of an air stripper at the Ranney Well to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the drinking water supply;
Operation of extraction and treatment systems to reduce groundwater contamination;
Installation of a supplemental purge well to control groundwater flow;
Capping of the Endicott Landfill to isolate the source of contamination; and
Ongoing groundwater monitoring to ensure continued effectiveness.
According to preliminary findings, the cleanup remedies currently in place continue to function as designed and are protecting the health of residents and the environment.
What Is an EPA Five-Year Review?
EPA Five-Year Reviews are conducted to confirm that selected cleanup remedies remain protective over time. These reviews are required when contaminants remain on-site at levels that may pose a potential risk. Each review includes:
Inspection of the site and remediation technologies
Review of monitoring data, operational and maintenance records
Evaluation of any new environmental regulations or standards
When Will the Review Be Completed?
The final Five-Year Review Report for the Endicott Village Well Field Superfund Site is expected to be released in Winter 2025. Once published, it will be available on the EPA’s Superfund website:
