Smoke Testing of Sanitary Sewers to Begin in Village of Endicott
In an ongoing effort to maintain the integrity of our public infrastructure, the Village of Endicott will be conducting smoke testing of the sanitary sewer system over the coming days. This important testing will be performed with our engineering consultant, Arcadis. The smoke testing will be done in the neighborhoods between Vestal Avenue east through Jackson Avenue and south of North Street to Main Street, plus the neighborhood located south of Main Street between Vestal Avenue and east through Booth Avenue. The Smoke Testing will occur from May 19 through May 23.
Smoke testing is a standard method for locating potential sources of stormwater or surface water entering the sewer system. By introducing simulated, non-toxic smoke into the sewer lines, crews can identify areas of concern such as cracks, leaks, or unauthorized connections.
What to Expect:
Residents may observe light gray smoke emitting from rooftop vent pipes or from areas where the sewer system may be compromised. The smoke used during testing is completely non-toxic, leaves no residue, does not pose a fire hazard, and is safe for both humans and pets. While it may have a noticeable but mild odor, the smoke dissipates quickly.
Residents with respiratory conditions or other health concerns are encouraged to contact the project representative in advance for special accommodations. The local contact for the testing is Lauren Johns of Arcadis, who can be reached at 518-250-7254.
Precautionary Tips for Residents:
Ensure that seldom-used drains (such as in basements or garages) are filled by pouring a gallon of water into them. This helps prevent smoke from entering through dry traps.
If smoke is observed inside your home or building, it may indicate a plumbing defect. Please ventilate the area and notify the nearby testing crew immediately. Plumbing repairs should be addressed promptly and may require a permit.
This testing is part of our proactive maintenance to improve sewer reliability and protect public health and the environment. The Village of Endicott appreciates the community’s cooperation and patience as this work is carried out.
